The determination of cardiac output by the dilution method without arterial sampling. II. Validation of precordial recording.

چکیده
The selection of an external site for a radioisotope determination of cardiac output is discussed with respect to satisfying the analytical conditions of the Stewart-Hamilton dilution equation. Examples of both single-chamber and multichamber recording are illustrated, along with a discussion of the difficulties of curve calibration and extrapola. tion from multiple sites. The development of a method independent of critical placement or patient variability is described.

Prinzmetal et a!, used 24Na for this purpose (1), while others used al bumin 1311 (2). With more extensive experience, procedures improved over the years until, in 1958, Pritchard et al (3) reported an effective method for the external precordial detection and determination of cardiac output with albumin †̃@†̃I. During this time, a good correlation with dye dilution technique by means of arte...
متن کاملEstimation of Cardiac Output from Precordial Dilution Curves in Patients with Cardiopulmonary Disease
Comparison of flow rates measured from precordial dilution curves, simultaneous direct arterial dilution curves, and nearly simultaneous Fick determinations in 29 patients failed to indicate any difference in precision. Successive precordial determinations of flow rate were adequately reproducible. It is concluded that the precordial dilution method gives flow values comparable to those obtaine...
متن کاملValidity of indicator-dilution determinations of cardiac output in patients with mitral regurgitation.
mHE indicator-dilution method has been widely employed for determination of cardiac output since its introduction by Stewart' and Hamilton and associates.2 The effect of unrecognized recirculation of indicator particles upon the primary indicator time-concentration curve has caused concern as to whether this method may be employed in such conditions as mitral regurgitation3' 4and as to whether ...
